The Collarini Career Catalysts: A Formula for Persuasion Success
Margaret E. Anderson

Put the Collarini Career Catalysts - Integrity, Self Confidence, Passion, Respect, Judgement and Communication Excellence - in your persuasion tool box, and you'll get more of what you want from others.

Communication Excellence is the twin sister of persuasion skill. Yet the most persuasive communication techniques are counterintuitive. Conversely, many of our instinctive reactions to others are counterproductive. So the first rule for communicating persuasively is: "Don't react." Letting the first thought that pops into your head erupt from your mouth can be disastrous.

So what do you do when the other person pushes your hot buttons? What if he presents an idea or argument to which you have no ready answer? What do you say? The short answer is: nothing. Don't reply until your impulse has settled down and another Catalyst - Judgement - has kicked in.

The most persuasive people do more listening than talking. If the other person has more to say, lend him your full attention. He's offering you a gift - a window into his mind. The more you see through that window, the better you can persuade him.

Don't worry that listening robs you of the time you need to think. Ironically, concentrating on the other person inspires better ideas than tuning him out to pursue your own thoughts. When he's finished, if you need more time, simply take it.

If the time it takes to sip your coffee isn't enough to get your brain around the problem, here's a handy segue to a longer break:

You: That's interesting. You've given this a lot of thought, haven't you?

Him: Yes.

You: I want to do justice to that by thinking about it, too. I'll get back to you at ten tomorrow.

Specifying a definite time to resume the discussion keeps the other person from feeling put off.

Then, by applying calm Judgement to your reply, you craft an Excellent Communication strategy that addresses the other person with Respect, your own interests with Passion, maintains your Integrity, and boosts your Self Confidence. Each of these catalysts stimulates the others in a formula for success.
