UH to Launch Petroleum Engineering Program The global energy workforce will need more hands on deck over the next decade, and the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering has stepped up to help provide those workers: The college will launch an undergraduate program in petroleum engineering in the fall of 2009. The new program, awaiting approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, will include a curriculum allowing students to specialize in areas such as reservoir engineering or petroleum geology. A strong emphasis will be placed on technology - computer systems, data mining and database management - as well as on leadership and entrepreneurial skills. In addition to offering a Bachelor of Science degree, the college will offer a certificate program for students seeking specialty training. Over the summer, two Fortune 500 companies committed major funding to support the new program. Marathon Oil Corp. pledged $600,000 in unrestricted funds, while Devon Energy Corp. committed $1 million to support student scholarships, the renovation of a student research laboratory and other needs.

Tips
on Resume
Writing First impressions are powerful, so make sure your resume
packs a punch. That doesn’t mean you should use “tricks” to make it
stand out from the crowd. Instead, you should use a traditional resume
built of strong fundamentals. Employers review 10 or more resumes for each
advertised position, and they appreciate being able to quickly and easily
compare candidates to job qualifications. With this in mind, we will
review the foundations of a good resume: Plain White Paper/Easily Readable Font Even small firms usually ask that resumes be sent via
e-mail. Easy readability is tantamount to ensuring your resume gets to the
decision maker. Plain white paper and standard fonts such as Arial or
Times New Roman are proven winners when it comes to ease of reading,
whether printed or viewed on screen. In their guide, “How To Write A
Masterpiece of a Resume,” the Rockport Institute recommends that your
resume present a simple, clean structure with as much white space as
possible between sections of writing. Resumes printed on colored or
textured paper can look fuzzy or distorted when viewed on screen or
scanned to add to a database. If the company uses OCR software, textured paper can
interfere with the software’s ability to recognize letters. Descriptive Yet Succinct Resumes filled with flowery words aim to impress but miss their mark, leaving the reader wondering: “What does this person do?” Ann Hackett with Quest Career Services says: “The purpose of your resume is to generate enough interest to have an employer contact you for an interview. Use the interview to provide a more detailed explanation of your accomplishments.” An effective resume uses action words that describe a skill. More words do not equal a better resume. For best results, once you have written your resume, review it to eliminate unnecessary words. Clarity and brevity are crucial. Essential
Information There is certain information that is crucial for a solid
resume. Valid contact information is at the top of the list. This may seem
like a “duh” point, but the truth is that e-mails change, phone
numbers change, and people don’t remember to update their resumes.
Chronology of work is another important aspect. While employers are
now more accepting of frequent job changes, a resume void of employment
dates is a red flag. Employers are concerned about turnover and candidate
stability. In today’s job market, it is likely that a resume without
dates will be rejected outright or held pending the receipt of a
chronological version. Finally, computer software knowledge should be
included in your resume. We live in an automated world and work in
electronic environments. The ability to use a computer is not optional,
and failing to indicate that you are technologically savvy is detrimental.
List widely used business software such as Microsoft
Office and any widely used software specific to your job function. Photo Not Desired The latest trend is to imbed a photo in your resume. Unless
a photo is requested, it‘s likely to be more harmful than helpful.
Photos are considered beneficial only if you are considered “good
looking” and you have no idea what the person reading your resume
considers “good looking.” Including
a picture that is not requested could be interpreted to mean, “I want to
be judged on my looks and not on any relevant work experience.” Putting these principles into practice will help you stand
out from the crowd much more than colored paper, flowery words, or
personal photos ever will.
