Reflections on OTC 2007

OTC 2007 closed its doors May 3, and an impressive conference it was, in both size and quality!    The largest offshore event in the world welcomed over 67,000 visitors, a 25-year high and a 13% increase over 2006.  Approximately 530,000 square feet of space was used by nearly 2,400 exhibiting companies from more than 30 countries, up from 2,229 in 2006.  The final number is not in, but it is estimated that visitors will have brought in well over $50 million to the Houston economy.

As impressive as the numbers, were the quality of technical presentations and the level of technological advancement displayed by the exhibitors.  Through its “New Technology” awards program, OTC highlighted 14 products and companies on the cutting edge of industry technology.  Check them out here if you missed them originally.  Walking down each aisle of the exhibits, it was easy to observe the enormous complexity of our business.  From the smallest tubes, hoses, and connectors to the largest top drives and subsea trees, it takes an incomprehensible coming together of multitudes of technical components to accomplish the simplest tasks: drill wells and separate oil, gas, and water.  Fly me to the moon!

We want to thank everybody who visited our booth.  We continued to hear that the need for people is foremost on everybody’s minds. Exploration Geophysicist with a Master of Science and 14 years of experience in prospect generating and management.  Extensive knowledge in geoscience and project management work, with expertise in reserve evaluation and seismic interpretation using volume techniques.  Developed, evaluated and acquired dozens of leases through MMS OCS Lease Sales in the GoM shelf.  Areas of expertise include offshore Texas, Gulf of Mexico and offshore Gabon. Geologist with a Master's Degree and over 12 years of exploration and development experience with a major oil company.  Experienced working individually and as part of multidiscipline teams integrating geology, 3-D seismic, and engineering data for field studies, development projects, acquisitions, and divestitures.  Comfortable with carbonate and sandstone formations, oil and gas reservoirs, and primary and tertiary recovery in a variety of fields.  Skilled in risk and reserve assessment, fault seal analysis, 3-D seismic interpretation, and well planning and execution.  Geographic experience includes the Gulf of Mexico, the Permian Basin, the Rocky Mountains, and the mid-continent area.  Workstation and PC experience includes Landmark StratWorks, SeisWorks, Z-map+, Geographix, and SMT Kingdom products.  Ask for G1045.

Geologist/Petrophysicist with a BS and 20+ years of experience in planning and implementing reservoir characterization projects and well-site geology.  Experienced in application of cross-plotting to develop relationships between different populations, core description of carbonate and clastic lithologies.  Knowledge of interpretation of conventional and special core analysis.  Workstation experience using Geolog, Multimin, Landmark Openworks, Petroworks, Stratworks and Z Map+, SDI Montage, Basinmod, Petcom Log Analysis, Powerlog, and Petra.  Proficient in speaking and writing the Spanish language. Mechanical Engineer with a Bachelor's Degree and 30 years of domestic and international experience.  Skilled at the project management of design, production, operation, and maintenance projects.  Experienced in pipelines, pump stations, facilities, rotating equipment, and project economics.  Geographic areas worked include Texas, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Proficient in various computer programs including Microsoft Office, Pipeflow, Pipeline tool boxes, Fathom, and Score Card.  Ask for F369.

Senior Construction Engineer with a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and 35 years of experience in the petroleum, power, and industrial construction industry.  Areas of expertise include project development, execution, scheduling deliverables, overall management, construction, quality assurance (ISO 9000), commissioning, and start-up.  Experience include grassroots construction, revamps and modernizations for petrochemical plants, refineries, cogeneration facilities, gas plants, and oil and gas facilities, developing and approving construction planning, procurement strategies, assigning key construction personnel, monitoring construction costs and schedules; managing quality and safety aspects of all projects and managing constructability program. Construction Manager with a Bachelor of Science and over twenty years of experience in project scheduling, cost engineering, field engineering for power plants, seawater plants, and offshore platform construction projects.  Experiences further include offshore LPG plant start-ups and helicopter developmental engineering scheduling.  Major project accomplishments include over $1 Million savings in projects to one client, effective crisis management for other employers.  Created a viable new business in Mexico.  Computer skills include Primavera P3E, P3, MS- Project, and MS-Office.  Languages English, Spanish.  Ask for PM18.

Mechanical Engineer with a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering and 11 years of experience.  Areas of expertise include rotating machinery equipment, system and marine structure including design, operation, repair, and maintenance and project management.  Experience includes design review of rotating machinery, equipment, systems for rig, offshore platform, and ships. Engineering Technician with over 26 years of experience with oil companies and consulting firms. Experience working with drilling, production, and reservoir engineers, preparing regulatory filings for state agencies, AFE tracking, and data retention of all wells, operated and non-operated, from date of inception until depletion.  Computer skills include ARIES, Landmark, MS Office, PEEP, and WellView.  Ask for TE179.

Drilling Operations Manager with over 25 years of experience in drilling, completion and production operations. Experienced in wellsite supervision, writing programs for gas lift and jet pump applications and planning drilling and completion projects. Geographic areas worked include, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, and Wyoming.  Ask for D315.

Petroleum Engineer with a Master's in Petroleum Engineering and over 20 years of experience. Resumes Redux

As a staffing company, we read a lot of resumes!   In doing so, we have observed characteristics that make a resume easier for a recruiter to understand and evaluate and those that make it more difficult.  Recruiters and hiring managers in all companies are very busy in this environment; now it is more important than ever to make changes that increase the chance that your resume is found and read by the right people. 

A resume is the one chance for a first impression.  Mistakes in a resume are the equivalent of spinach on your teeth when going to an interview!  You may think your resume is in good shape, but here are some tips that recognize that recruiters have to read a LOT of resumes every day.

  • State your country of origin and work status in other countries.  If you are interested in working in the U.S., you should state your eligibility to work with or without a sponsor.  This will allow a recruiter to expedite forwarding your resume in the right direction.

  • Capitalization should be reserved for proper names or for words at the beginning of a sentence.  Lots of capital letters in the middle of paragraphs are distracting; job titles, department names, technologies, and other similar items do not need to be capitalized.

  •  Keep to a clean and simple format.  Complex fonts and formats may look good but may make your resume hard to read; they also might not translate well between different versions of word processors.

  • Can you believe we have to say this? DO spell check the final document, and carefully accept or ignore each change suggested by the software.  And always read the final document.  Spell check, for example, turns “GeoQuest” into a “bequest” and “bbls” into “bibles”… and, be sure that all changes that were tracked are accepted permanently in the final document.

  •  Be sure to include dates for each of the positions you have held.  We tend to set aside resumes without time lines, because they are difficult to understand and match with positions.  You can always explain oddities about your assignments in the interview, and we can’t hide our age forever….

  • Avoid verbosity.  Even the most experienced professional should have a resume no longer than two to three pages.  Special technical expertise can be handled in an attachment.

  • Concerning acronyms, remember that the resume is read not only by experts in your field but often first by professional recruiters who also have to understand your expertise in full.  Also, some acronyms and abbreviations may NOT be picked up in a keyword search even though you have the perfect qualifications.  “HPHT” is clear to a large segment of our industry, but the computer search may use the words “high pressure / high temperature.”

  • There is no need to itemize the software in the Microsoft Suite.  MS Office will generally do, and most people don’t need to mention it at all; working knowledge is assumed.  Do not list software that is obsolete; it does not matter, and it clutters the resume.  Do include current technical hardware and software abilities.

  •  Is English your second language?  Find somebody to proof read your resume, or have it professionally completed.  How well your resume is translated directly reflects your reading and writing ability in English.  Be sure it is done correctly.

There are lots of other ways to improve a resume and have it stand out from hundreds recruiters receive every day.  The above examples we found in just an hour of reading the resumes of technical and managerial personnel.  We would be happy to hear your thoughts on how to make additional improvements, too!
