Our Perspective

A lot of people ask us about what we see in the economy and specifically the employment trends in the U.S. and our industry.  We therefore continue to look at specific segments of the industry, this time with a closer look at geosciences.  We also took a broader view of trends in the economy and the industry.  While still mixed, there appears to be good news on the horizon.  If you are interested in examining the information in more detail, rigzone.com, an oil and gas industry specific website, has published some salary trends after conducting a survey recently. We hope you find this information useful.

Hiring Trends on the Rise

The past two years have been tough for all industries and all professionals.  Many companies were forced to experience their first large layoffs in years, while others put in place hiring freezes.  The economy has suffered enough, and it finally looks like it is on its way back up.  Obviously, it will take a while to get back to where the economy was four to five years ago and specifically to where the oil and gas industry was, too.

According to www.cnnmoney.com, the economy looks to be creeping back into place, but not as fast as economists have been predicting.  The labor department recently reported that the number of Americans who filed new claims for unemployment fell from 468,000 to 462,000 last week. Economists had a very slightly more positive outlook of it dropping to 460,000.

With the unknown backdrop of economic recovery timing still looming around, many companies have cash on hand, which is one of the factors for the jump in mergers and acquisitions.  While these large M&A actions are not necessarily a sign of the economy being back on the rise, but they are more a sign of strategic moves for long-term growth in the future.  Most recently, ExxonMobil acquired XTO ($41 B) and just recently BP purchased Devon properties in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caspian Sea.  Drilling activity is on the rise as well.  Baker Hughes reported earlier this month that there was an increase from 1,170 rotary rigs working one year ago to 1,396 rotary rigs working for the first week in March.  Texas led the pack with 23 new rigs working for a total of 588 rigs, and Colorado and North Dakota coming in way behind with three and two new rigs, respectively.

A recent Forbes article ranked Houston fourth on the list of cities where the recession is easing.  Forbes notes that due to Houston's highly specific industries in which it operates, it is more insulated from the volatility of the economy.  Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio are also on this list, ultimately giving credit not to just the energy industry, but also the technology, education, and government industries that enhance Texas's oil riches.  Houston, along with Dallas and Austin is expected to experience a 7.03% rise in jobs over the next three years.

Adecco's Tig Gilliam and SFN Group's Roy Krause, who are leaders of two of the largest staffing companies in the United States, are expecting to see 20,000 temporary workers hired per month.  Gilliam notes that Adecco has seen an increase of 50% in temporary hires that have been hired on full time.  The fourth quarter of 2009 saw a revenue improvement and more search activity.  Also, Manpower's report states that the second quarter of 2010 should see a "modest" hiring increase.

Not only are temporary jobs on the rise, but so are new business startups.  In 2009, Challenger, Gray & Christmas published a job market index resulting in 8.7% of job seekers gaining employment by starting up their own businesses, which was a significant increase from 2.7% for the final quarter of 2008.

Confidence and risk tolerance in finance are rising as well.  An industry market research firm, IbisWorld, expects to see loan services grow 40% in 2010, which is a huge spike compared to the purge over the last two years.

Anyone you ask about the economy will have not so positive a view to present.  But those of us in the oil and gas industry, especially those of us in Texas, need to continue to be positive, because we see the results first hand.  The amount of doubt should be decreasing with drilling rigs on the rise, temp jobs on the rise, start up businesses on the rise, an increase of cash on hand in companies, and larger mergers and acquisitions on the rise.  Really, there is nowhere to go but up.  We have seen improvement in the economy since 2009, and we will continue to see improvement in the coming months.  Thank goodness for the new year!

Geoscientists Rock!

With respect to the current state of the geosciences professions, this idiomatic title is certainly apropos.  Despite national reports about the recession and unemployment, the demand for geoscientists is growing stronger, with the long-term outlook increasingly positive as markets and economic conditions improve.

As with convergent boundaries, salaries and the demand for geoscientists often mirror the price of geological commodities such as fuels, metals, and construction materials.  While lower prices for some of these commodities have resulted in staff right-sizing, those same low prices support demand. As economic conditions improve, demand and prices should increase to create an environment of renewed hiring reports www.geology.com.  For more information about current salary statistics go to http://www.rigzone.com/jobs/salary/.

Historically, the petroleum industry employs the largest number of geoscientists with nearly 40% of all geoscientists working in the exploration and production of oil and gas reserves.   Here are some of the areas of expertise requested by our clients:

·        Geographical experience

o       Gulf of Mexico - deep water and shelf

o       Marcellus, Haynesville, and Barnett Shales

o       Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast

o       West Africa

·        Geological and Geophysical software

o       SMT

o       GeoGraphix

o       Petra

o       Petrel

o       GeoQuest

o       Landmark Suite

Additionally, our clients look for flexibility with candidates.

·    Are they skilled in both geology and geophysics?

Are they willing to work contract or contract-to-hire?  This is in direct contrast to the situation seen during the 2006 boom followed by the simultaneous crash of 2008 and 2009 in both oil demand and global economic health, where full time employees were in huge demand and short supply.

No matter what your current situation is, the key to weathering the escarpments of one's career is a focused understanding of one's personal goals, flexibility as to the means of achieving those goals, an attitude of continued, ongoing learning, and ultimately which assets you bring to your next opportunity.  If you find yourself between positions, take this time to sharpen your technical skills and stay abreast of industry news. You may want to complete the next level of your education or just take a technical course to enhance your skills.  The bottom line is that preparation for your own metamorphosis is vital to continued success.
